October Notes

Posted in Notes on October 31, 2010 by AZSalsman

Well 10 down, 2 to go. That is 365 less 61 days.  That makes 304 days of new and, somewhat, fresh views of the world as seen through a camera lens. Okay that includes the 4 or 5 days lost in the hospital. 10 months making this the 10th end-of-the-month update note.

It has reached a point that much of the challenge is simply meeting the challenge itself and less of creating the artistry of the photo….but then that is often when we learn the most or our skills are called into account.

One thing I have learned this month came from someone’s comment – and I can’t remember who said it or where – but he/she indicated that I find different perspective to everyday objects.  I began to realize that that is true and one aspect of photography that I enjoy.  There are so many people shooting so many different subjects that it can be difficult to find a niche. On October 10 – Porcelain Angel, I took a photography of a porcelain sculpture that was part of an exhibit at our church.  I thought of taking it from the top down.  Suddenly there seemed to me an intimacy with the same piece – a new perspective and appreciation for a piece of art that did not previously appeal to me at all.

I have a few ideas for the next month but we will see.

October 31, 2010 – Shavings

October 31, 2010I am sorry that I did not offer something more “Halloweeny” for today’s image. I settled for another addition to my “texture” collection. I though I might be able to construe some connection to the Trick or Treat activities but nothing comes to mind.  For now, I will just ponder the possibility that this was what was left from the coffins of those who arose from the grave on this night of tempest great.

….well, not really but it was a start.

October 30, 2010 – Who Thought of This One?

October 30, 2010Okay. I saw this sign today and could not resist recording it. It still confounds me as to what they are enforcing. As I see it, there are a couple of options:

  1. You sell your vehicle.  You have violated the law and punished with a tow.  But you have sold the vehicle.  WHAT IS LEFT TO TOW?
  2. It is illegal to sell your vehicle.  You can steal, donate, hijack, abandon or swap vehicles…BUT NO SELLING IT!
  3. If you sell your vehicle, you, the violator, will be the one towed…not your vehicle….and likely towed to the location of your vehicle…which you sold.

Well, whatever they mean, I am keeping my vehicle. I can’t afford the tow.

October 29, 2010 – An Angel

October 29, 2010Where else would an angel be looking? For in anyone knows, an angel would know whom they serve.  Who do YOU serve?

Okay, that was just my sappiness that lies beyond the test drive of a Halloween costume that Carol made.  Brooke’s sister, Ariana is Queen Esther!  Me, I guess I will dress as a photographer.

October 28, 2010 – Age

October 28, 2010

For some reason, I like old books.  I like the look, the feel, the smell.  Like this book of Psalms and Hymns which is signed “William Nickerson, 1867”.  Perhaps it is because the tattered covers, the dog-eared pages, the failing binding all tells a story. There is only one way to obtain that which is weathered and aged as such….time.  I guess, too, that is why I find weather beaten wood, or rusted farm equipment so intriguing.  I want to ask each one “what was life like when you were a child?”.  Not everything that is good is new.

October 26, 2010 – A Simple Game or Math Class?

October 26, 2010

What do you think: a game between two people or an after-school math class?  When you consider what it takes for a kindergartner to add two die to know how many squares to advance, you consider the cleverness of Godmama to combine play with learning.  Sorry!
