You are right….it will be HARD to choose which photo to use for my day endeavor of this photo blog. Had several from some artistic shots that turned out well of some birds and local housing to a group of 5 to 13 years olds working on a banner to come back with me to “America”. I chose this one, however. This is a class of some of the older kids working on self-portraits.

They told me today that this was once a golf course. Now it is a pasture for the cows. In Bulembu, which do you think was the wise choice.

Actually, my tour guide today said that a lady from Canada recently told him that in Canada, they are turning farms into golf course. Here, they are turning golf courses into farms. Talk about a transformation!

July 17, 2010 – An Hug to Remember

July 17, 2010

I did not mean, really, to post two close up faces consecutive days like this but in this case I could not help it…not so much because of the photo itself but because of the story that goes with it.

You see, as I and another lady were led on a walking tour of Malanda*, just outside Bulembu, there were these children working … or playing … or both. This little girl was the youngest (about 3 years old I would guess). I bent down to talk to her and complimented her on her nice jacket and somehow that inspired her to lift up her jacket to show off each of the 5 t-shirts – and belly button – she had on underneath.

Here is where this gets interesting. The tour guide continued to explain how the houses are constructed when suddenly I felt this little girl at my feet and as I looked down, she was giving me the biggest little hug that I have had for a while. She, of course, was only tall enough to reach my knees abd her head was snuggly nestled in my lap but she meant every affection she had.

A few moments later after we secured a little bonding time, she grabbed my and to lead me somewhere to do something (neither of which I could figure out) and then she was done. But for about five minutes, we were best friends – and she never uttered a single word.

*Note: Malanda is a “village” of homesteads that make up Swaziland and a stark contrast to the transformation that is occurring in Bulembu itself.

I am including this photo as my photo got this day. She is just one of about 7 women who works in the fabric part of the Bulembu Creativity Center. I wanted to take their picture. They were delighted. In fact, they got extremely giddy like little girls. The manager told me that the women used to be withdrawn in that if you spoke to them they would not give you eye contact or respond or shyly turn away. That is the culture of the people here. Now they will share their stories. Now they will respond to the camera..with boisterous laughter.

July 15, 2010 – An Old Door

July 15, 2010It must seem weird to have my FIRST picture I Bulembu be of an old door. Certainly I can come up with all sorts of symbolism justifying the choice – such as this what Bulembu WAS like before its present transformation – but the truth is, I just thought it had character. I didn’t have a lot of opportunity today to take pictures as I was scouting out my territory but I did manage to get one. More will follow, I am sure.

I arrive in Atlanta and got to the terminal for the next leg of this journey just in time to watch my home for the next 15 or 16 hours arrive. If you look above the wing on this visible side of the plane, that is the location of the one piece of furniture that is allotted me in my abode – a chair complete with a dinner table, tilt back recliner features, GPS, personal home entertainment, personal spotlight and very close neighbors. Welcome to Flight DL102 from Atlanta to Johannesburg.
